You should not allow this fact to be beyond your understanding that all behaviors your puppy is allowed or trained to practice, soon becomes second nature, and far more pronounced to your comfort or displeasure, if that puppy should grow to five or ten times it’s present size.
In other words, take a look at this scenario. Here is a new adorable puppy walking down the street with you pulling at the leash, and the dog is excited by what is going on around, and being greeted with a kind pat on the head, with a smile from passing strangers.
Fast-forward several months, what was once a puppy is now a big dog of some fifty-five pounds or more, and is now literally dragging you down the side-walk on a leash. You are no longer smiling like months before, and have to muscle-up to prevent the dog from dragging you down and or to hold it back from touching other people that are using the side-walk.
That unpleasant scenario becomes your reality if you ignored the critical importance and time required for puppy leash training, from the instant your new puppy arrives home or from a very early age.
It is very important to have the proper leash for a productive and pleasant dog leash training experience. Never use the retractable leash for leash training a dog, because you need a leash that can both provide constant tension on the dog’s neck, and at same time maintains a very short distance between the dog and you.
That is because, a short distance provides you with consistent leash pressure and release moments , in effect signaling the dog to understand the commands you are teaching him, such as walking politely or heeling. The ideal distance should be no more than five feet, which allows the dog to sniff about as you walk, and at same time allows you all the control needed for dog leash training.
Otherwise, with too much distance typical of a retractable dog leashes, the dog easily loses any conception, that you are walking with it, thus defeating the purpose of leash training a dog.
Proper leash training equipment.
The type of leash material must never be nylon dog leash, regardless of it’s convenience of being easily washable or even it’s colorful presentations, because if all of a sudden, the dog pulls and the nylon leash moves through your fingers, you will get a bruising. Note also that it is very hard to get a firm grip on a nylon dog leash.
Likewise, stay away from use of chain leashes, otherwise you risk your hands getting badly injured, should the dog pull on it all of a sudden and your grip slips. The bulky, heavy and large dog leashes are too cumbersome to deal with.
In case of leash training a dog, the ideal training equipment is a leather leash, and such leather dog leashes should be no more that five feet length, with a width of half an inch to three quarters of an inch.
