August 28th, 2008 — dog ticks
In essence, dog ticks is a parasites that not only molest your dog but can also cause dog disease or worse to your dog.
This parasite, the dog tick can be an uphill battle to eradicate because of it’s resistance to insecticides.
Ticks on dogs
It is known to lay thousands of eggs, not on the dog but in dark places such as under the carpeting in the house, crevices of the kernel and baseboard. The eggs hatch into a larvae within a month which then seek out a dog, fill up on the dog’s blood and thereafter, drop off into hiding and emerging three weeks later having developed into an eight legged nymph.
You guessed it, the nymph seek out your dog as a host, jump on it, engorge on it’s blood, drop off the dog into hiding again, emerging in three weeks as an adult tick, thirsty for your dog’s blood, after which the nymphs mate to produce tick eggs and the parastic cycle begins again.
It is known that an adult tick can hibernate for two years without need of a dog as a host. Bear that fact in mind in your efforts to get a handle and eradicate this parasite or in taking preventive action.
A dog tick feeds by burrowing it’s head under the skin tissue of your dog and extending it’s hooked or barbed mouth, thus making it complicated to remove manually. That tick once it fills up, drops off your dog to mate and then hides in the usual places to lay thousands of eggs.
Dog tick removal..
A tick attached to your dog skin can be removed manually if it is not already hooked into the skin or in delicate areas such as the eyelid or inner ear or other inaccessible ares that would definitely call for anesthesia. Brushing or combing your dog may get rid of ticks not yet firmly attached to the dog’s skin. The ticks already firmly attached to a dog’s skin do so by means of a hook-like arrangement of their mouth, and require a bit of strategy to unhook these suckers.
Removing tick from dog
Pull back the dog’s hair to allow exposure of the tick, then apply a few drops of iodine or rubbing alcohol onto the exposed tick. The effect of either of those two solutions causes the tick to become loose. You then use tweezers to easily pull the complete tick off your dog.
Ticks treatment
Be aware not to severe the head and leaving it embedded into the skin, because that can cause infection of a dog disease, as is also possible from the puncture left when a tick is removed. It is therefore advisable to reapply alcohol or iodine to the area. In cases where a tick’s head breaks off remaining embedded into the skin, apply hydrogen peroxide to the area and that ensures total neutralization of any ill-effects.
It should be kept uppermost that where there is one tick, there are most probably others, whether at a larvae stage or nymph stage and thus and so.

July 25th, 2008 — leash training a dog
You should not allow this fact to be beyond your understanding that all behaviors your puppy is allowed or trained to practice, soon becomes second nature, and far more pronounced to your comfort or displeasure, if that puppy should grow to five or ten times it’s present size.
In other words, take a look at this scenario. Here is a new adorable puppy walking down the street with you pulling at the leash, and the dog is excited by what is going on around, and being greeted with a kind pat on the head, with a smile from passing strangers.
Fast-forward several months, what was once a puppy is now a big dog of some fifty-five pounds or more, and is now literally dragging you down the side-walk on a leash. You are no longer smiling like months before, and have to muscle-up to prevent the dog from dragging you down and or to hold it back from touching other people that are using the side-walk.
That unpleasant scenario becomes your reality if you ignored the critical importance and time required for puppy leash training, from the instant your new puppy arrives home or from a very early age.
It is very important to have the proper leash for a productive and pleasant dog leash training experience. Never use the retractable leash for leash training a dog, because you need a leash that can both provide constant tension on the dog’s neck, and at same time maintains a very short distance between the dog and you.
That is because, a short distance provides you with consistent leash pressure and release moments , in effect signaling the dog to understand the commands you are teaching him, such as walking politely or heeling. The ideal distance should be no more than five feet, which allows the dog to sniff about as you walk, and at same time allows you all the control needed for dog leash training.
Otherwise, with too much distance typical of a retractable dog leashes, the dog easily loses any conception, that you are walking with it, thus defeating the purpose of leash training a dog.
Proper leash training equipment.
The type of leash material must never be nylon dog leash, regardless of it’s convenience of being easily washable or even it’s colorful presentations, because if all of a sudden, the dog pulls and the nylon leash moves through your fingers, you will get a bruising. Note also that it is very hard to get a firm grip on a nylon dog leash.
Likewise, stay away from use of chain leashes, otherwise you risk your hands getting badly injured, should the dog pull on it all of a sudden and your grip slips. The bulky, heavy and large dog leashes are too cumbersome to deal with.
In case of leash training a dog, the ideal training equipment is a leather leash, and such leather dog leashes should be no more that five feet length, with a width of half an inch to three quarters of an inch.
July 22nd, 2008 — retractable leash
A critical dog training tool to discipline or even condition your dog as to what activity the dog is allowed or not allowed to do, is something called a dog leash. By and large, this is meant to be a temporary tool designed to help your dog or puppy come to an understanding of the rules regarding certain behaviors and activities.
Among the extensive varieties of dog leashes available, is one that happens to serve more that one function, from one of basic dog training to a practical leash that also ensures dog safety during outdoor walks. The favorite to most dog owners is the flexi-lead dog leash. This leash allows your puppy or dog to walk measured distances away from you, all the while still being under your total control.
Your dog too of course enjoys that freedom of movement and the fun it allows the dog to explore about, ten or fifteen feet away from you or even longer. This is possible because the flexi dog leash has a mechanical device that allows it to uncoil, and you can stop it by simply pressing a lever. It is in effect called a flexi retractable dog leash.
Of course, a dog leash is indispensable whenever you are outside walking your dog, and in public places more so, such that your dog does not bother other people. In public areas, your dog must be kept on a short leash as a safety measure if anything else. Furthermore, if you enjoy bike riding, a retractable leash is of excellent use as a dog bike leash.

July 13th, 2008 — avocado, dog treats
Avocado is a natural choice dog food, and legend has it that it was the avocado growers, somewhere in the tropics, who first observed that their dogs were keenly competing with the grower for any fallen fruit.
Avocado is a natural dog food, that not only adds palatability and texture to the usual domestic dog food that is usually a dry meal, but also adds a supplement of fats. Of course, your lovely dog is living and just like you requires a balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and fats.
The fat in dog food is important for the dogs health, for providing a healthy skin and a glow in their hair coat, as well as energy. How much fat a dog requires in the diet for energy depends on how active the dog is. A good dog food recipe for a working dog should provide for at least 20% fat, even if it was a homemade dog food.
The average domestic dog needs at least 8% fat in it’s diet, while a thin dog absolutely needs a wellness dog food rich in fat until his weight improves. Since most domestic dogs get most of their fat from canned dog food, and most dogs love avocados, therefore avocado added from time to time serves as a very welcome and caring measure of dog treats.
Be aware that only the meat of the nutritious fruit that is avocado. is the only part that can be given as pet food, the rest of it such as the avocado pit and skins must never be given to a dog or other domestic animal that walks on four.
As a small part of natural dog food, avocado is rich in potassium, vitamin E, B-complex vitamins, vitamin K and magnesium.
July 8th, 2008 — barking control
You might well be aware that dogs learn by associating their actions with pleasing or unpleasant results, and therefore an effective method for dog barking control is one that visits displeasing consequences to the dog.
Control Barking Dogs
It is no secret that dogs by and large hate loud noises, therefore you can easily devise a method, home-made perhaps , that decisively delivers a chorus of loud noises, the louder the better, right to the dog whenever your dog engages in dog barking nuisance, as many untrained dogs want to do.
One such method that makes and delivers loud noises literally on demand, is the use of tin cans, about five or six of them tied together on a string. You can greatly amplify the loud noise effect by adding or loading marbles or pebbles inside each can.
Now you are going to make sure that you can throw those loaded cans accurately as near the dog as possible without striking your dog. Already then, whenever you hear the dog barking unnecessarily and you want to stop your dog from barking, immediately throw those cans, accurately enough for a landing right next to the barking dog.
At the instant that the cans land next to the dog, you need to yell loudly a command such as “Stop it” or”Shut up” or “No”. Just be sure it is precisely the same command every time. Within the week, you will notice that your dog has started to respond to your yelling commands by instantly halting barking, to avoid the nasty shocking experience of loud noises from the volley of the tin cans. In the beginning the dog may attempt to change location, only to discover that the dreaded loud noises of the tin cans can surely follow him wherever.

Dog Barking Solution Video
Please note that dogs are smart enough that in the beginning the barking dog behavior will continue if the dog finds out that once you have hurled the tin cans, you are powerless to repeat the operation without approaching the dog to retrieve the loud cans for another volley of loud noises. It is therefore advisable to prepare ahead and have ready on hand a number of sets of cans for instant use to stop the barking dog.
The dog has to know that one bark, and the sky is right away raining with a volley of horribly loud noises from the tin cans, and that is one effective dog barking solution.
July 7th, 2008 — overweight dog
Dog weight loss, as far as the relevant diet is concerned, is best left to the veterinarian advice.

July 1st, 2008 — dog supplements
In the world of domesticted dogs, dog food requirements differ according to the age of your pet. For instance, your dog puppy requires higher amounts of protein, minerals , vitamins and calories to provide for it’s rapid growth, while an adult active dog requires foods that sustain energy and dog health, and a sedentary dog if fed on the same food, it would simply put on excess weight.
In general active dogs require quality feeding from meals composed of 45% fats and 45% protein, including a few necessary dog food supplements. However, a number of factors including improper diets, processed foods and even drugs tend to overextend the capabilities of that system, and that leads to oxidative stress. June 29th, 2008 — dog nutrition
It is one of the critical elements of life and it is known as water, and a must component of proper and good nutrition for dogs and dogs health.
In particular, performance dogs and active dogs must be kept well hydrated with high quality water that is devoid of chemicals. If well hydrated, your dog stays cooler even under streneous conditions and its use of calories and glucose is that much efficient.
Comsider the fact that a dog’s body is at least 67 percent water, and at once you can understand why making sure your dog has access to quality water at all times is very important. Even sick dogs respond better to water provided the problem is not diarrhea and or vomiting, otherwise consult a veterinarian so as to keep your dog from dehydration. There is a simple, less than one minute, do it yourself test to check if your dog is hydrated or not. Part a bit of hair on the dog’s back and at that point lift up the skin, then observe how quickly that skin snaps back to the original position. If your dog is well hydrated, the skin snaps back immediately and if it is dehydrated it goes back slowly enough for you to see it.
Your dog knows best how much water it needs hence the critical importance of it’s access to quality water at all times. Cold or warm water is not an option for your dog, rather just be sure the quality water provided is at room temperature. Should you observe that your active dog is not drinking water over several hours, that is an indicator that the dog is not feeling well.
When it comes to carbohydrates, humans for the sake of their own convenience favor an abundant use of carbohydrates in dog food as a source of energy, merely because carbohydrates are plentiful and manufacturers find them easy to work with. That is man’s folly, because canines in the wild use the barest amount of carbohydrates. Any digestive problems arising are usually due to feeding your lovely dog much carbohydrates.

You will find that dog nutrition with less carbohydrates improves the health and performance of your dog, especially as they get older. However, it should be emphasized that dietary fiber is a must, to go with the carbohydrates for the benefit of your dog’s colon health, because fiber provides bulk in the intestines, regulates transit times through the colon, absorbs excess liquids and digestion overall is much improved. You will find dietary fiber as a wellness dog food, because it is indicated as very useful in your dog’s weight, constipation, diarrhea and even diabetic conditions.
Home canines are primarily by nature meat eaters, but not exactly like the big cats such as the “man-eaters of Tsavo”. Their primary organic dog food as meat eaters, provides them with protein, essentially the amino acids that are the building blocks for their tissues, muscle mass, size and of course strength and energy. If you talk about growth and development of your dog, you are talking protein and that is the natural dog food.
With the meat comes a fair amount of fats, which by the way, can provide twice the energy derived from carbohydrates and proteins. Furthermore, fats influence the texture and palatability of your natural balance dog food. Proper fats in dog food are critical for reproductive efficiency, while a deficiency of essential fatty-acids in your dog nutrition can impair wound healing, causes a dry skin and coat. When it comes to essential fatty acids, it is best to feed your dog supplements of essential fatty acids that are low in calories.

June 28th, 2008 — labrador dogs
As a prospective dog owner, it would certainly make your life a lot easier in the arena of dog-ownership, if you were at first exposed to a functional overview and therefoe an understanding of what exactly are the labrador dogs.
Labrador retriever dogs are natural hunters and thus much task oriented and not too comfortable with lounging around. These are action dogs, attentive, always eager to do something and they have the energy to match those traits.
What that amounts to in functional terms is that you as the prospective retriver owner must have the temperament and disposition of someone that is physically action oriented, able to set tasks for your labrador dog and keep it fairly busy and with you taking part in the actions. Any thing short of that simply tells you that the labrador dog breeds are not your best choice.
The labrador obedience training takes time and patience and you are much rewarded by a very good companionship from your retriever.
A good word about caring for your labrador puppy with natural products comes out of the aromatherapy realm. This is a mixture of different essential plant oils that are rubbed onto your dog’s coat and are pleasantly effective in repelling mosquitoes, treating and preventing fleas. Natural products are once again proving their worth in effectiveness, safety and are very pleasant to use when compared to the harsh and often toxic chemicals that are in dog pet stores nowadays.
